Avirtual Golden Age

There is much to be said forthe bottomless well of usefulness of the Internet. Among the manyreal-world things we’ve seen virtually replicated on web:telephones, encyclopedias, jukeboxes, book stores, movie theaters, auction houses, publishing houses, town halls, universities andnewsstands, to name a few on a list that grows.

The truth is,it’s hard to imagine the future of technology because it changesso fast. Although some people do try. It would have been difficult, while sitting in aroom with a UNIVAC computer in 1951, to dream up blogs andRSS feeds or fathom the concepts behind interactive websites likeyoutube, myspace or wikipedia. You can bet DanO’Connell and Erastus Corning were not talking about siliconchips or nanotechnology when discussing the future of Albany 50years ago, although if they had, they would have demanded allmicrochips developed in Albany be Democrats.

We live in thegolden age of Internet development – a sci-fi like environmentwhere you can order anything online for next-day delivery andpeople walk around with the equivalent of a Star Trek communicator. Our daily tasks and routinesare steadily infiltrated by digitized data and global networks. This is good.

TheInternet has been a catalyst for new forms of communication thatpeople never knew could exist before they evolved out of people’sdesire to be connected. It’s a basic human urge to interact withothers who share similar interests and desires. Never before hasthe infrastructure for such exchanges been available to so many andat so low a cost.

The web is onlygoing to get bigger and better. Computers and broadband connectionswill get faster. Wireless technology will be more widespread. Justlast week, the Thruway Authority announced it would add WiFi internet access to all 27 rest areaslocated on the NYS Thruway.
